The latest advances in hall effect micro electronics allow for robust very wear resistant sensors to be developed at low cost. Surface mount technology, weather proof bearings and IP67 sensor housing solve many previous issues.
The main outstanding problem at this time is damage from lightning and lightning generated electromagnetic fields. Due to the reduction in costs, boats can now easily carry replacement or alternative sensors (e.g. transom arch mounted).
